Pike’s Peak or Bust - the EBC Dry Run

Summit

Carol and Duffy Russell traveled to Colorado Springs, Colorado on August 8-11 to make a dress rehearsal with their new equipment.  Looking at all the possibilities, the best test for the Everest Base Camp trek was to cash in some frequent flyer miles and head for America’s Mountain – Pike’s Peak.  Pioneers made Pike’s Peak the symbol of the 1859 Gold Rush to Colorado with the slogan “Pike’s Peak or Bust.”  Read the rest of this entry »

Latest from Marian in Vancouver

Well, I have been in Vancouver just over a week and am managing to continue with my training. Jan Rea, Andy, Mary and I (Razzu knows all of us from the Annapurna trek) hiked up to Black Mountain above Cypress Bowl on Tuesday and today I got up early and did a steeper trail up Grouse Mountain with a friend. It is quite steep and Jan feels that it is steeper than anything we did in the Annapurnas. The elevation gain is 690 meters and we did it today in 1 hour 50 minutes. I had on my heart monitor and had to stop occasionally as my heart rate got above 165 which seems to be a default as it beeps then. My average was 156, probably close to the top of my range. We took the gondola down and the view was amazing. It is a beautiful day here and I am glad we did it early as it is now 33C. Mary and I have gone to yoga almost daily, including today and I have also done a couple of power walks with Jan in the university endowment land trails. We are so lucky here in Vancouver to have so many options. I suspect I will be at the back of the group but do feel confident that I can hang in there on our Everest trek. Now we are off to the beach to hang out and play some Bocce.

I look forward to a blog entry from the Russell’s’ recent hike in Colorado. Razzu, I think Dick was hoping that you would post his “tongue in cheek” email from a few days ago when he sent out his fictitious but funny summit trainer exercise routine. Let’s get blogging!

Namaste,
